The Importance of Diversity in the Modern World

On August 14, 2017, I posted this article on LinkedIn. Three years later, the levels of racism and racists attacks on a global level have increased beyond what many would imagine. The hate that is manifested in a variety of behaviors appears to know few boundaries. People are dying and leaders are not invoking the necessary strategies to stop the emboldened actions of people who feel entitled to hurt others because of ‘difference’.

Yet, three years later, we continue to address these debilitating issues and desecrating actions towards humanity through strategies that have historically proven to not work. And, more people (typically untrained) are now stepping out as diversity ‘experts’ concomitant with more organizations instituting ‘chief diversity officers’.

For those of us who worked with diversity strategies in a variety of organizational environments years ago know that the ‘tried and true’ tactics currently being deployed are exercises in futility. At what point will this country and our world understand that the movement towards a global environment that values humanity has to go beyond training and other non-sustaining initiatives and interventions? And one person with the title of diversity officer is not capable of driving that change.

I invite you to read this post and if you find it in your heart to do so, read the book, “Beyond Diversity and Intercultural Management”, Robinson-Easley, C.A. (2014), New York: Palgrave Macmillan.

Through the blog on this website, I will also provide information germane to driving deep change in multiple environments. I encourage you to read and dialogue and if you’d like to reach out, I would love to engage in a conversation.
